One week ago I hopped in a 15-passenger van and embarked on the Communion Tour. I met up with my tour-mates, The David Mayfield Parade and Matthew & The Atlas, in Austin, TX last week, where I played a warm-up show with M&tA and where DMP was opening for the Avett Brothers.  On October 17th we left Austin at the crack of dawn, barely stopping until we reached California just in time for the first show of the tour, at the Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles.

In the alley behind the venue in LA is where we were able to get an hour of rehearsing in before the show began, as we still had to figure out how to meld our sets (a big part of this tour was the idea of doing “seamless set transitions” from one  act to the next) and what our group encore pieces would be.  Two hours after our first rehearsal, it was showtime!  I kicked off the night with a solo set, joined at the end by members of the David Mayfield Parade who continued to rock the stage after me with their high-energy songs and David’s hilarious stage presence.  Their set fused into Matthew & The Atlas’s, who play perfectly-orchestrated and haunting folk songs that will leave you completely mesmerized.  At the end of the night all three acts took the stage to play and extended encore that featured “The Rake” by Townes Van Zandt, “Lonesome Road Blues” (trad.) and “I’ll Fly Away” (trade.).

This is how the last week has gone for me, and how it will be for the next few weeks of this tour.  In the first week we played in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Visalia, and Big Sur at the first Communion In The Redwoods festival; a completely free festival held at Fernwood this past weekend.  It was a magical way to close out a magical week, amongst family and friends in the most beautiful of places.  It’s been a thrill and an honor to get to share this show with my loved ones, as I am so excited about the music that is being made on stage within the Communion sets.

Tonight we are in Seattle and tomorrow we head to Portland, then it’s off to the midwest, the southeast and the east coast where we’ll wrap things up next month.  It’s a blast to get to see the country at this time of year amongst such fine company; I am soaking up every second and feeling very lucky indeed!

COMMUNION TO LAUNCH IN THE U.S.

Communion, the U.K.’s most revered live music promotions team, are pleased to announce further details of their greatly anticipated move into the U.S, with a special free live webcast performance at the state-of-the-art TRI Studios (Tamalpais Research Institute) in Marin County, CA on October 21, featuring performances by Matthew and the Atlas, The David Mayfield Parade and Lauren Shera.

TRI Studios is the vision of Bob Weir, a founding member of the Grateful Dead. Weir and his team have built a cutting edge studio for broadcasting live HD video and audio streams directly to the Internet. TRI is a virtual venue where fans can gather and enjoy the performances in the comfort of their own homes, or anywhere they have Internet access. Recent artists to participate in the webcasts include Furthur featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, Slightly Stoopid and Chickenfoot, whose performance garnered over 10,000 views.

In addition to the previously announced Communion Tour that is underway now, the monthly Communion shows taking place at Café DuNord in San Francisco, and the 3-day Communion In The Redwoods gathering, the live webcast will further foster the culture of Communion, which offers emerging, developing and established artists a creative and collaborative platform. Additionally, fans will be included in the experience via the live webcast, and by communicating with one another via Facebook and twitter. The performance will air live in North America on October 21st at 10pm Eastern / 9pm Central / 7pm Pacific, and in the U.K. and Europe on October 22nd at 8pm / GMT (9PM BST). The webcast can be viewed here: http://www.tristudios.com.

Communion is the brainchild of Mumford & Sons’ Ben Lovett, his close ally, Kevin Jones, and renowned producer Ian Grimble. Formed in London in 2006, it began as a monthly showcase, known as Communion nights, at Notting Hill Arts Club, where bands would share different musicians and collaborations often provided fresh material.  Communion very quickly became the home to some of the U.K.’s most accomplished and praised young musicians as well as the go-to team for promoting and encouraging fresh, emerging talent in London and beyond. Communion offered a live platform to artists including Laura Marling, The Vaccines’ Justin Young, Marcus Foster and Anna Calvi (who was promptly selected as one of the BBC’s Sounds Of 2011 nominees after Communion’s early support).

Built solely on a freedom of expression, an ear for a tune and a celebration of exactly what the live music experience should be all about, Communion and its broad-minded, ever-evolving family have made light work of discovering and nurturing what MOJO calls a “new generation of songwriter.”

Heralded across the British press for its community spirit and an enviable reputation for introducing some of the globe’s most highly acclaimed young acts, Communion’s events have become the U.K.’s foremost home for eclectic, exciting parties to respectful, passionate music fans.

Ben Lovett, Communion co-founder/Mumford & Sons notes, “We founded Communion as a way for people to get together and play music without all the hassle of dealing with money-grabbing venue promoters. No matter what the venue size, they’ve always been amazingly intimate occasions.

We’re incredibly excited to be launching Communion in America, where not only are there literally thousands of excellent musicians that we want to promote, but it’s also a country full of passionate music fans that we want to feel part of the Communion experience. It’s a massive deal for us to expand, and we cannot wait to get cracking.”
